Innovation at the BEAL LAB

The heart of innovation at BEAL is the BEAL LAB. The BEAL LAB isn’t just another corporate research lab where researchers and developers run tests in a vacuum. Instead, the BEAL LAB is a fully integrated team in which corporate researchers and developers work directly with mountaineers and climbers on the BEAL Team to design a wide range of products. The BEAL Team, comprised of 22 world-renowned climbers such as Patrick Edlinger and Fred Rouhling, test BEAL products and continually provide feedback and suggestions to the BEAL LAB.

A couple recent exploits of the BEAL Team:

- Bjørn-Eivind: In December 2011, the Norwegian climber recently opened a new route on the famous Cerro Torre in Patagonia. It was his second attempt, so Bjørn-Eivind was particularly ecstatic to summit:

“The next morning there was only positivity and every move was an adventure in itself. Following vertical to overhanging veins of ice on the sides of the mushrooms for seven pitches and at one point traversing out on the belly of one of them to avoid a dead end, took us to the summit of Egger on the 26th of Desember. We rapped the line of the Torre Traverse and ate our last food at our bivi site on the col in the setting sun.”

About Beal Ropes

- Alizée Dufraisse: the French climber has several wins under her belt, and she is the first girl to climb Scarface, 8b+ and Big R, 8b+ at Smith Rock, and Reneigoide, 8b+ at Siurana. Recently, Alizée redpointed Patinoso route in the El Pati sector, a 130-foot endurance climb. She used BEAL’s Joker rope. In her words:

Key BEAL Technologies

Although BEAL is constantly innovating, climbers of all skill levels particularly appreciate the BEAL DryCover and GoldenDry technology:

DryCover

Each and every BEAL rope receives the DryCover Treatment, which is a hydrophobic treatment for the sheath.

- The technology:

o Each filament of the sheath is coated in Durable Resistant Yarn Cover, and then heat-treated to create a shell of polymerized molecules around the filament.

o The molecules of the polyamide are then chemically bonded to fix the shell, which results in a highly resistant, durable yarn cover.

- What this means for you:

o Increased resistance to wear and tear from dirt, abrasions, falls, and wetness

o Increased active lifetime for the rope

GoldenDry

The DryCover procedure makes the sheath water resistant, but it does not make it water repellant. If desired, BEAL can also conduct the GoldenDry treatment, which makes the core both water repellant and even more durable.

- The technology:

o In a continuous process, each filament in the core strands is coated with a fluoride solution and then heat-set and polymerised onto the polyamide.

- What this means for you:

o No water weight increase on the rope

o No risk of freezing during cold weather climbs

o Drastically increased rope longevity and durability

o Many indoor climbers actually use GoldenDry treated rope to save money, as the rope costs slightly more, but ultimately lasts longer

To get a sense of how effective these treatments are, the BEAL LAB conducted a study on a 100 metre rope during winter conditions. In one day, ropes absorbed drastically different amounts of water:

- Untreated Rope: 2.5 Litres

- Beal 2003 dry treatment: 1 Litre

- DryCover Treament: ½ Litre

- GoldenDry Treatment: ¼ Litre

BEAL and the Climbing World Championships

The French Mountaineering and Climbing Federation (FFME) and BEAL have decided to continue their partnership until 2015. As FFME’s Official Partner, BEAL will be providing a new rope for the 2012 Climbing World Championships, which will be held in Paris-Bercy from the 12th to the 16th of September.

The new rope is the DIABLO. The DIABLO benefits from a special UNICORE Treatment that allows it to be much more supple handling than typical ropes. This rope feels like a classic, but behaves like the cutting-edge breakthrough that it is. DIABLO has already received three awards, listed below, and BEAL is looking forward to equipping the lead and speed team competitions at the Climbing World Championships with DIABLO.
