Dynamic ropes are the most popular climbing rope, designed for all-purpose climbing use, including leading, toproping, and rappelling. By design, dynamic ropes stretch under load, which is how they absorb the energy of a fall and stop the climber with a "soft" catch. They come in a variety of types (twin, double/half, and single) and in a variety of thicknesses (from "skinny singles" in the 9-10 mm diameter range designed for hard redpointing, to standard workhorse 10.2-10.6 mm diameters that stand up well to abuse and have a high number of falls rating). For more information, see Choosing Your Cord. |
